Christian is doing research in the area of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp). In particulary, he is interested in collaborative system software for small networked sensor platforms which are considered to be one of the most basic enabling technologies for ubicomp. An example is the Particle Computer platform which we developed at TecO.
Christian's goal is to support developers with an operating system, which provides generic and reasonable collaboration mechanism for networked sensor platforms. Those mechanisms are required to overcome performance and energy restrictions when devices of a platform work distributed in complex ubicomp scenarios. The operating system will act proactively in ubicomp scenarios by utilizing information of the situation surrounding the devices of the platform. This information is described as contexts. Using contexts is a new approach which separates ubicomp from other research areas like embedded system and distribiuted systems and makes it a new research area.
Christian is/was involved in various research projects. Among them are CoBIs (technical lead, representing TecO as the largest academic partner), SmartSurroundings, LoCostix, and Polytos. Christian also fosters ongoing joint research activities between companies like SAP Research Lab Karlsruhe (CEC), KDDI research labs (Japan) and TecO. Some outcomes are Smart Items, the AwareGoods project, the SmartShelf, the DigiClip, and the Embedded Business System (EBS). Please have a look on the project page for further details.
Since March 2006, Christian has been assigned the role of managing the TecO research group. This includes responsibilities for the research agenda, staff and resource management, project acquisition and financials.
