The INBOX E-Mail Client delivered with the most HPC´s retrieves all information from the Registry.
<br><strong>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PMAIL</strong><br>
You can manage your Email from different Servers by adding one Service per Email Server/Account. The information like SMTP-Server, POP3-Server, Username is stored in the registry. If you check the "Save Password" box the password is stored in the registry, too. The Inbox-User can´t see the password - it is displayed by the inbox-program as a secret string (********). The service information can be found here:
<br><strong>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PMAIL\ServiceInfo</strong><br>
Attention! The password(s) is stored without being encrypted and can e.g. be displayed by the RegCE.Assist.
An Attack can be done by installing a trojan horse or a service checking for a WindowsCE Connection (e.g. at a public docking station) and reading the registry values. Download a simple batch file using the RegCE.Assist for demonstration:
<br>
<br>
<a href="HPCRegPW.bat">PMAIL-Password-Reader</a>
<br>
<small>(Do not forget to download the <a href="RegCE.Assist.exe">RegCE.Assist</a> to run the batch-file.)</small>
<br>
<br>
Solution: Do NOT store any account-passwords (Email, NT-Domain etc.) on your WindowsCE and enable Power-On Protection by selecting the Control Panel - Password-Applet!!
